New data on duration of family law cases

The Ministry of Justice has recently published a new set of quarterly court statistics that show the average duration of civil and family cases at every County Court. This will enable the public to see how quickly cases are handled at their local court, and to compare it to other courts across England and Wales.

Forced marriage consultation

The Government has launched a consultation, seeking views on whether forcing someone to marry should be a criminal offence or whether current arrangements provide adequate protection. It is also interested in views on what more could be done to prevent forced marriage from happening.

The Law Reform Committee of the Bar Council, which represents barristers in England and Wales, has held its annual lecture. The Rt. Hon. Sir Nicholas Wall, President of the Family Division and Head of Family Justice for England and Wales, spoke on “Changing the Culture: The role of the Bar and Bench in the management of cases involving children”, calling for changes to the traditional management of cases to be applied by barristers and the judiciary.
